Dining Out

Hi Guys

So, I started on the house this week. Thanks for your lovely comments last week, I appreciate the floor plans of this new house aren't quite as visually interesting as the last set I posted but be sure that I am doing my bestest to produce some really great interiors. And perhaps more importantly, as far as I am concerned, something that will last LOL!

I'm being rather unconventional in my approach (or at least for me I am!) in that I am working from the inside, out. By that I mean in order to complete certain parts of the rooms it is easier to complete things like some panelled walls etc before I put the sides on the structure. One of my interior design heroes is David Mlinaric. He has had an outstanding career working on projects like Spencer House and The Royal Albert Hall, not to mention heading up the design team behind the National Trust. He also works closely with another of my all time hero companies "Quinlin Terry". Architects extraordinaire - specialising in classical design and traditional construction methods. I'll commission them when I win the lottery!
So, having read, re-read and read a bit more of my Mlinaric "bible" I took the plunge and got started on the Dining Room. It will be the biggest room in the house 40cm wide x 40cm deep 30cm high, panelled and painted in Cooking Apple Green. I think it has an Edwardian feel to it which always looks a little more modern, I think anyway. Here is a picture of the back wall mid panelling with my fireplace pride and joy.

The cornice at the top is a trial of what I might use.

This picture gives an idea of the room lay out.

The door to the room is on the right, in front of the pillars which act as an enfilade before entering the main space of the room. There will be a window on the left wall and I'm currently agonising over fabric colours, I'll probably play it safe and pick a pale warm yellow. This will help if I ever switch the room into a Drawing room at a later date.

Here you can see the right hand side wall newly panelled and the back wall painted. I have a lovely full length portrait by Gainsborough (not real obviously - gutted!) that will hang in the central panel on this wall.

I stained the floor a medium oak colour as I was worried anything too dark would pull the walls in.

Right, now I'm off to paint this wall and think about the panelling round the window.
Take care All and happy mini-ing...
Simon

  3. Hello Simon!
Yessssssssssssssssssss! Absolutely beautiful work and what a grand room this will be. It is great to see you back doing what you do so well. I love that cornice moulding.
Wish I could help with marble, but it is "hit or miss" with the technique I use. If you can find a video by "Bluette Meloney" you might find it helpful. I learned a lot about marbling from her.
Congratulations on starting this new project! Can't wait to see it continue and evolve.
Warm regard and a hug from Ray

    1. Hey Ray
Praise indeed, thank you. Thanks toofor the note about the marble, I will check out the site you mentioned. I have since removed the comment asking for help, having found Marble Paper which I will use and then glaze for a satin finish. One problem down...
Im hoping to do another post this evening with an update.
Take care, hope you don't have eye strain after your Versailles flooring - can't wait to see the Saloon.
      Hugs
